Gertrude Goes West, Part 1

Gertrude's Diary

The big trip is over. The impossibly good, once in a lifetime, dream holiday in Western Australia, proudly brought to you by WA Tourism and the adorable man who decided to take me along with him when his name was drawn out of the email barrel. I”ve had the added amusement of hearing the words, “I can still take someone else with me to Western Australia, you know”, whenever I voiced dissent or disapproval during the months it has taken to organise. Not that I have let that stop me airing my opinions. It”s kind of my vocation.

INSATIABLE BANALITIES #19. The Lavans

Recorded on Tuesday 9th August, 2005, Insatiable Banalities, podcast #19’s special guests are Jake, Stoz, Nick and George of the Lavans and it’s notable for some great music, lots of swearing and for being the first Insatiable Banalities to be delivered in mono, halving the file size to a very manageable 30 megs or so. Another Bloody Bootleg Review

Here is a review of the latest installment of the Bootleg Sessions at the Phoenix, the fourth in a series of appraisals of the bizarre little efflorescence of musical culture that the Sessions represent. It is both the most immediate and drunkest review I have written, it being about 4.00 AM in the morning after a night on which I myself, with my redoubtable partner Sharkie, rounded out a night of grand entertainment in that little den of visceral pleasure, the Phoenix Bar, with a set of songs that somehow, inconceivably, made the Phoenix seem glad to have us like a good friend you suddenly get to know a whole lot better.

Gertrude’s Diary #13

Gertrude's Diary

I”m touched by loadedog”s hats off to me, but I feel that I should clarify a couple of points.

I was meeting a few friends with a view to playing some music when Big Al arrived with the news that Loadedog was getting a run on the new 2XX “in the can” program, and that one of our songs might be played. “Well, cool. We”ll have a listen then”, we said. And it was an enjoyable novelty to hear a familiar voice in that ephemeral medium, and we giggled at his various faux pas and agreed with what he said, or not, as the case may be.

Gertrude’s Diary #12

Gertrude's Diary

I”ve been waiting for the muse to turn merry before I wrote this, but the prevailing mood was critical. Something wasn”t right. And then last week a friend who”d borrowed my Frank Zappa collection for 3 months visited with my CD”s. I”ve missed them; that irreverence, that perspicacity, that abundant talent. Now there was an artist who didn”t mind prodding his audience out of their comfort zones. In fact here”s a couple of lines from “The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing” which sum up my dissatisfaction with the world.

INSATIABLE BANALITIES #17. Matt Dent

Recorded on Tuesday 26th July, 2005, Insatiable Banalities, podcast #17’s special guests are Matt Dent and Geir Brillian (formerly Gunnarson). Matt is a great singer song writer who plays great slide guitar and normally blows a harp but he forgot it for the recording. Geir is a music producer from Iceland who, from his secret studio somewhere in Canberra, has produced an ungodly amount of music for many of the towns quality bands.
