Merry Muse Folk Club, Sunday 24th Oct, 2004

We went to the Merry Muse Folk Club last night to see Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen. We have known (and grudgingly admired) Mikel for some years now, but never seen his whole show, catching him most often at gigs at the Phoenix in various guises. First let me say that the Merry Muse is an excellent cultural institution. This was recently recognized by ArtsACT with a $20000 grant so that the big fat fairy Bill Arnett can continue his great work as director, publicist, M.C. etc.

Recorded on Sunday 9th October, 2005, Insatiable Banalities #25′s special guest are Rafe Morris from Da Ha Hoo and Johnboy’s brother Bo who is visiting from Tokyo. Rafe plays some of his own songs plus a song sung by a famous furry puppet. From Bo we learn a few things about Japanese contemporary culture like the Japanese love Reggae and the truth about whale meat. And there’s lots of the usual crap. Gertrude sends her apologies.

Kununurra. I look at the map now and it seems improbable that I”ve been there, so far is it from familiar latitudes. The town itself seems unlikely. Built completely in the last 40 or so years as part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, (about which I now know more than I ever thought possible about large-scale engineering and its agricultural application), Kununurra sits artificially upon the great wilderness of the Kimberley, thriving upon the bounty of Lake Argyle.

Our guide book states that April to September is the best time of year to visit, and indeed, the sky was a faultless blue. Fork-tailed Kites circled the town; large birds of prey also known as fire-birds because they will pick up and carry burning embers, starting new fires to improve their hunting. Great!
