RITA MARCHANT ALBUM LAUNCH – REVIEW

Folkus Room, Friday 29th August

by Viking Princess

Local Canberra artist Rita Marchant launched her debut album “Strong” to a packed house at the Folkus Room last night. The large crowd seemed suitably impressed with Rita’s stellar performance. She was ably supported by a five piece band which included her husband/drummer Peter Marchant. Kingsley Bruce added his keyboard talents in cameo appearances during the evening.

Rita’s music defies genre’s and crosses boundaries with joyful enthusiasm. Her performance last night was full of the colour of folk, blues, pop rock and jazz. She was thoroughly entertaining.

She surprised me with her versatile vocal range from sweet as honey to those deep earthy tones and everything in between. My favourite was “Have Mercy”, so full of life and energy!

There was more than one song that had the crowd dancing in front of the stage, Rita has a dynamic enthusiasm for life that is contagious!

Rita is an accomplished singer songwriter who has been performing since she was 12 years old. Those years of experience and her warm heart shone through in her music about real life, real situations and the positive attitude she has to life and relationships. Rita also performed two beautiful ballads from her album which were introduced and written by Rita’s manager Nicole. These were “Can’t Take Back the Tears” and “Meg’s Song”.

You can listen to some of Rita’s album on her MySpace.

Although I do recommend you find out where she is performing next and go out of your way to get there!! You can buy her album while you are there of course ; ) or from The Music Shop online.

Rita has recently been honoured to have two songs from “Strong” short listed to the second round of judging in the Australian Songwriting Association 2008 Songwriting competition.  I forgot to ask her which ones…
