Last Wednesday
The Last Wednesday @ The Hippo feat. Fire on the Hill
Bic Parker, Special Correspondent
Last night at the Hippo Bar in Garema Place a bunch of lads gathered with one thing on their minds; having fun. I arrived just before nine and the band had not begun. I was a bit surprised to find seating was almost gone. The band started and a refreshing wind blew over the room.
Polished. Sharp, were words I heard describe what people were hearing. Fire on the Hill are not new. They have been around for the last four years that I am aware of. It is testament to what the combination of music, environment and sound can achieve and full credit to the organisers for presenting this performance.
The band, consisting of lead, bass, acoustic guitar and a full set of drums as well as a drummer, ex jazz school, all combined to produce a sound reminiscent of the West Coast sound that surfaced in the mid seventies. Elements of Richard Clapton, Dire Straits, Boz Scaggs, America were all evident as this troupe confidently played to and won over the crowd.
I have heard this band before but never like this. It surprises me that the depth of these bands is rarely explored by the average punter. However you certainly can tell when a crowd appreciates depth. If there was to be anything to make note of it would be the sound was just a tad loud in places. But it was crisp and exciting.
The night was very much a success in terms of experiencing a wholesome performance on a balmy Canberra evening.
