Humphries on Hicks

Here is Senator Garry Humphries’ office in downtown Canberra yesterday. Looks pretty normal. But wait, what is that sign in the bottom right-hand corner?

Humphries Office

David Hicks Poster

Good Lord! It’s a ‘Bring David Hicks Home’ poster. Has Senator Humphries joined the cause to end David Hicks living Hell in Guantanamo?

Perhaps not.

As above

Incidentally, I rang Garry Hunphries Office to enquire what his views were on the Hicks case. A staffer, perhaps the one above, advised me that ‘Senator Humphries is doing all he can to ensure that the Australian Government does all it can to ensure that David Hicks can have a speedy trial’.

I further enquired, ‘do you know how long the Senator has been of that view? Is there any record of the Senator having said anything about David Hicks before this week?’ ‘The Senator has written numerous letters to constituents advising that he is doing all he can to ensure that the Australian Government does all it can to ensure that David Hicks can have a speedy trial’.

‘But is there anything on the public record about the Senator saying or doing anything about David Hicks?’ ”The Senator has written numerous letters to constituents advis…’ It was at this point that I realised I was talking to a machine.

  1. Whilst this question may seem quite unfair, I do have to ask if you planted, or were involved in the planting of, that sign?

I doubt that you were involved, but it just seems quite coincidental bordering on convenient that you had your camera with you.

Of course, you may have just seen the sign, gone home to pick up your camera, and come back…but the question must be asked.

It is unfortunate that my first comment on your new site is almost an attack.

  2. Hi Sam

An unfair attack? No. Sorry to disappoint you, but yes, I did plant the sign there.

  3. Oh well, we all have to generate a story from time-to-time!

How long did the sign last before staffer G- L- came out and removed it? (Yes, I know the photographed sign removalist).

  4. About 10 minutes. Very assiduous your friend, no?
